A fantastic day of cricket was organised by Hatherleigh Cricket Club, Hatherleigh Primary School and students from Okehampton College.  With over 200 children attending from 10 local primary schools there was a fun atmosphere as the children were taught by the college students and cricket club coaches a series of batting, bowling and fielding skills. The groups who were split to mix children from all schools in together and played some Kwik Cricket in the afternoon. Stuart Lord the Okehampton School Sports Co-ordinator said" it was an excellent day with the children really enjoying themselves. Special thanks should go to Richard Tidball, Brooke Osbourne and all the student coaches for the festival". There are a wide range of children’s cricket clubs in the area and if anybody would like more details they can contact Stuart on 07813314176.

Year 6 Hockey Festival Report

On Wednesday 30th January we held our 3rd Year 6 Hockey Festival.  All our Year 6 children across the 10 feeder Primary schools took part throughout the day, approximately 90 in the morning and 110 in the afternoon.  Unfortunately Chagford School were unable to make it.  Perhaps next year!

The children took part in 2 skill workshops of passing and receiving and tackling, before going into a mini tournament within their groups.  Nicola Hutchings, a Hockey Coach, planned the Skill Workshops which were delivered by herself, Tammy Messenger (West Devon SDO), Zoe Colton (Teacher and Coach) and 18 of Okehampton College Hockey Students, from Yr 9, 10 and 11.

Our Students really rose to the challenge of being Hockey Coaches and enjoyed being in the role of a Leader.  The students helped coach in the morning session and then lead the sessions in the afternoon.  The Year 6 students were fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed learning new skills and developing their understanding of the game.  All Schools had received a Hockey taster session leading up to the Festival.  A Participation Certificate was received by all Year 6 children who attended the Festival.  Thank you to Tammy Messenger at West Devon for providing the certificates.

As a follow on, those Year 6 children who wish to further develop their skills can attend a Year 6 Hockey Club on a Tuesday from 4.00-5.00pm at the College.  The club will be run by Berni Hachipuka and the College Hockey players and will start on the first Tuesday back after halt term and will run until Easter.

Thank you to everyone who helped in the running of the Festival, especially to the teachers who ensured all their children were wearing shin pads and Gum shields!  The College will look forward to seeing all the Year 6 children developing their Hockey skills when they move up to Year 7.
