March 2009
Kingsbridge Learning Community Gym and Dance festival
Our annual festival was held on Thursday March 12th at Quayside. It was a chance for children from our primary schools to share with others the work they had been doing. We were treated to some exciting and beautiful pieces of both dance and gymnastics.
West Alvington performed a whole school dance. Dancers were dressed in black and in costumes depicting monkeys, birds and snakes. A beautiful, rhythmic and colourful display.
East Allington performed ‘A special kind of heroes’. An energetic bouncing display of dance with whirling red and blue pompoms. Kingsbridge year 3’s performed their dance of ‘Invaders’ telling the story of civilisation from long ago. With their tartan sashes and orange shields they moved to the insistent beat of a drum.
Charleton treated us to their story of Brunel and the building of the Royal Albert bridge. Brunel and his party dressed smartly in black oversaw the workers digging, lifting, hammering and constructing the bridge. The dance ended with excitement and celebration in the form of an exuberant country dance. Stokenham Year 3’s showed us their interpretation of the ‘Rainforest’ and danced their way through the exploration of the jungle with haunting music to accompany their movement. East Allington brought Reception, Years 1 &2 with their delightful dances entitled ‘Toys.’ Fabulous costumes with children dressed as soldiers playing fanfares on their trumpets, animals and toys gradually coming to life like puppets. Malborough complete with a real maypole performed three increasingly complex maypole dances. This was a test of total concentration and coordination as the children guided their ribbons intricately around the pole and then unravelled them to the accompaniment of a lone violin. Aveton Gifford brought their older children with a perfectly timed routine of step patterns in dance.
Loddiswell gave us an exciting display of the Haka led by 5 drummers and then a gym display which included some difficult moves and balances all performed with precision.
Ivybridge Primary Gymnastics Academy travelled over to show us 3 pieces of their work which included a floorwork routine, a dance and some trampette apparatus work.
It was exciting for our children to see different types of very polished work. We finished the day with a display from Kingsbridge Gymnastics club, an elaborate routine comprising individual and group work some breathtaking balances and heart stopping, energetic tumbling.
I am continually thrilled by the performance of our children and the dedication of their teachers and helpers in making this event so special. With the very limited spaces that schools have in which to work the transformation onto a big floor space is phenomenal and every single one of the 400 children has to be sincerely congratulated.

Kingsbridge Area Primary Schools Netball Tournament - 5th March 2008

The annual Netball tournament sponsored by the Rotary Club saw all 10 schools in our area competing for the Netball trophy. Schools had been practising hard for this competition and as a result the standard was high and the play very competitive.
In the first round Aveton Gifford and Kingsbridge won their sections with Stokenham and Malborough coming second. In the second round Kingsbridge ‘B’ played West Alvington and Salcombe combined, Kingsbridge narrowly won giving them 9th place. Thurlestone played West Charleton and by an even narrower margin Thurlestone won and achieved 7th place.East Allington versus Loddiswell playing for 5th position resulted in a draw with neither schools scoring goals due to powerful defending.
The semi finals saw Aveton Gifford playing Malborough and Kingsbridge ‘ A’ playing Stokenham. Each team played excellent quality Netball and Malborough beat Aveton Gifford 2-0 and Kingsbridge beat Stokenham 3-0.
The 3rd and 4th place competition was now between Aveton Gifford and Stokenham. This match was exceptionally hard fought, each team tried their very hardest and Stokenham won by the narrowest of margins, 1 goal , thus giving them 3rd place overall.
In the Final Kingsbridge ‘A’ team played Malborough for the trophy. This match was very competitive, both teams played with such determination the ball travelling from end to end with defences fighting for possession in order to set up their shooters with chances. The final result was a win to Kingsbridge ‘A’ team by 3-1.

My grateful thanks go to the adults and children who helped to make the event a success:
Julie Holland of Thurlestone school did a magnificent job in organising the whole tournament . Students from years 7 to 10 helped with the smooth running of the event. Anna Thapa took on the very difficult role of umpire, Katie Abrams, scorer and timekeeper and Laura Tregelles, Charlotte Holland and Beth Yeoman helped schools with their teams. Anna Johnstone chairman of Kingsbridge Netball Club umpired throughout. She said ‘ Kingsbridge Netball Club are looking forward to welcoming any girls to the club when they reach the secondary school. A free taster session will be held during the summer term.’
Finally, the Rotary Club, were very generous with their time in attending the event and presenting the children with medals and certificates and I am most grateful for their continuing support of children and their sport in our area.

Year 7 Swimming Gala in December 2007
The annual Year 7 Swimming Gala took place in December. Eight tutor groups and a total of 120 swimmers were involved in this very exciting event. There were races for all abilities ranging from one length to individual medleys to test the more advanced swimmers. There were many courageous performances by children who had never previously raced in competition before.

The teams were supported by their assistant tutors and peer listeners. The excitement on the poolside was deafening everyone cheered and clapped when spectacular performances were in progress. It was a measure of real determination that no one gave up however far behind they were.
I am very grateful to Gill Hayes, Nikki Walters, Sharon Mulligan, Karen and Hedley Arscott, Claudia Gunner and Jane Day from the Kingfishers Swimming Club who provided such professional support. Also the junior members of the club Holly Gunner, Abbi Walters, Jess Rigby, Sam Jones, Will Rawlinson and James Pinwell.
The final results :
- 1st 7 BRM
- 2nd 7 PT
- 3rd 7 SNL

Multi-skills Festival - November 2007

Year 2 students took part in a festival on 28th November hosted by Kingsbridge Community College. The day was led by students from Year 12, 9 and 7, three club coaches and a teacher. 98 children arrived at Quayside Leisure Centre and were put into groups with children from other schools. Each group followed a circuit of activity which involved ball skills, agility, running and story and actions. The story and action episode was included to remind the children of the Physical Literacy programme which they follow in school. This was a challenging task for our two leaders Sian Baynes and Lydia Brown, both year 12 students, but they did a superb job inventing their own stories and linking it to the familiar curriculum. A great job was done as usual by our coaches, Sue Ansley Community Hockey coach, Anna Johnstone Kingsbridge Netball Club and Ali Creed Kingsbridge Gym club. David Watson, Deputy Head at Loddiswell completed the adult helpers to whom I am very grateful. My students, Jenni Jones, R Lethbridge, Zoe Luscombe, Jodie Duthie, Annette Codner, Sian Baynes and Lydia Brown, Adam Burke and Alex Fawcett are all junior sport leaders and I had absolute faith in them and was truly impressed by their high standards of teaching. Jess and Beth Creed showed that they too were excellent leaders in their first experience of an event like this.
