Gig rowing in Plymouth

On Friday 9th October a few selected pupils from Ivybridge Community College braved the wind and the rain to get out onto the water at the Mount Batten Centre in Plymouth. Donning their lifejackets (in case of an unexpected early bath) they all helped to get the Catalina afloat, from its trailer and onto the River Plym. With most of the pupils being in a gig for the first time, there was a crash course on how to row a gig and what was the correct technique. They then embarked upon a 1 and a half hour outing that saw them row upstream towards Turnchapel then turn and head out towards the Hoe in Plymouth Sound. From a wobbly start the crew soon came together and started to work as a team, making a good speed even in the rough waves of Plymouth Sound.
Invited students will soon have the opportunity to continue the programme by taking part in weekly indoor rowing sessions.

Quad Kids Primary School Athletics Competition
Quad Kids is the new competition format from England Athletics and we tried it out for the first time on Thursday 11 June. 14 teams from local primary schools came to the College and the children all competed in 4 events – standing long jump, a throw, a 75m sprint and 600m. The competition was able to take place because of the excellent links we have with Erme Valley Harriers Athletics Club and club members ran the events. Peter Barry, the national manager for Quad Kids, was also there to support the event and make sure things ran smoothly and our local Competition Manager, Bob Powell also assisted. At the end of the afternoon the children’s score were quickly totted up and the final results showed that Manor A team came 3rd, Holbeton came 2nd and Stowford A team came 1st.

Primary Tennis Tournament
The College and local primary schools have an excellent link with South Devon Tennis Centre. During March year 5 and 6 pupils from 7 local primary schools have benefited from this link and have had the opportunity to visit the tennis centre, experience the excellent facilities on offer there and also receive coaching from club coaches.
The final event within this programme was a tennis tournament held at the club on Monday 23 March for teams of 4 boys and 4 girls from the participating primary schools. 2 students from Ivybridge College, who are part of the Tennis Academy programme, Rhys Dunford and Jason Colmer helped with the event by umpiring and supporting the young players, alongside tennis club coaches.
At the end of the event the winning school was Shaugh Prior Primary, who went home with the cup and big smiles on their faces.

Primary Schools’ Gymnastics and Dance Show 2009
![]() ![]() |
The annual primary schools’ Gymnastics and Dance Show took place at Ivybridge College on Wednesday 3 March. Over 200 young people from 10 local schools took part. In the afternoon they had the opportunity to share their work with each other and in the evening they put on a show for parents, which was very well-received by an appreciative audience. There was a huge variety within the pieces shown. Some of the work had been produced within lessons and others within after-school clubs. The youngest children were from year 1 at Manor Primary School, who did a gymnastics piece with year 6 children helping them. Ivybridge College contributed a GCSE dance and a pairs acrobatics routine by year 9 students, to show the primary children and the audience what the younger children might be achieving in a few years time. Paralympic Handover Celebration
On Wednesday 17 October 11 students from the Ivybridge Community College visited John Kitto Community College for one of many events nationwide celebrating the transition of the Olympics and Paralympic Games from Beijing to London in 2012. Along with several other schools our students were challenged to row 200,000 metres on rowing machines in a two-hour time period. Many of the students who attended had disabilities, so some rowing machines were adapted to facilitate everyone. All of our students had a go and after a lot of hard work the combined target was reached and with 15 minutes to spare. The event as extremely successful I raising awareness of the Paralympics and all that’s left to say is, ‘Bring on London 2012!’

Primary School Football Festival Photos - November 2007
A primary schools’ football festival was held at Ivybridge Community College on Thursday 15 November. The event was specifically planned to give an opportunity to pupils who don’t usually have the chance to represent their school in football.
11 local primary schools took part, fielding teams made up of younger age groups or pupils who don’t usually have the chance to play for their school’s ‘A’ team.
Students from Ivybridge Community College volunteered to help with the event. David Staddon took coaching sessions for the boys and Alan Rogers, Harry Golding and Charlie Price refereed. All 4 students from year 10 and year 12 were excellent role models and encouraged the young players throughout the event.
Malcolm Collins, Deputy Principal at the College closed the event by presenting certificates to all who took part.
This event will be followed later in the school year by a competitive football tournament which will be held in March.
